Residents in Manipur's Jiribam flee homes after man allegedly murdered by armed miscreants

After a 59-year-old resident of Sorok Atingbi Khunou was brutally murdered on June 6, tension and fear have engulfed Jiribam district in Manipur.

The aftermath of this brutal act has led to a series of violent events, leading people residing in Mongbung Khul, to abandon their homes in search of safety. They have sought refuge at the LP School in Chingdong Leikai, highlighting the dire situation and the need for protection.

Adding to the chaos, reports emerged of arson attacks targeting residential properties. One house in Nunkhal and a farmhouse in Leisabithol were set ablaze by unknown individuals, exacerbating the sense of insecurity among residents.

Jiribam, known for its mixed population, has traditionally been peaceful. However, the recent surge in violence has shattered this calmness, prompting authorities to impose Section 144 to restore order and tranquility.

The tragic death of Singh, coupled with the ensuing violence and fear, underscores the challenges faced by the community in the Jiribam district. Security forces are actively investigating the incidents, and efforts are underway to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents affected by these troubling events.

The incident unfolded when Soibam Sharatkumar Singh, a 59-year-old resident of Sorok Atingbi Khunou in Jiribam district, fell victim to a brutal murder on June 6.  Sharatkumar, accompanied by his wife and son, visited their farm at Jairolpokpi around 4 PM on Thursday. While his family returned home, Sharatkumar remained at the farm. Concern grew when he failed to return home, and his phone was found switched off.

A grim discovery ensued when Sharatkumar's 2-wheeler and footwear were located near a CRPF camp at Uchathol, Jiribam, suggesting a possible abduction. Following an intense search operation by security forces, Sharatkumar's lifeless body was found around 7:40 PM in a bush in Mulargaon, approximately 4 kilometers from the abduction site.

The tragic details of Sharatkumar's demise revealed a horrifying reality – his neck had been slit with a sharp tool, marking a heinous act of violence. This shocking incident sent shockwaves through Jiribam, leading to a surge of unrest and violence in the district.
