The Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande while speaking on the prevailing security measures and situation in the violent hit northeastern state of Manipur on January 11 said that the situation has been stabilised due to the combined efforts of the state administration, Army and Assam Rifles.
The Army chief further added that efforts are underway to normalise the situation and ensure stability in the state that has been witnessing violence since May 3 last year after clashes broke out between the Meitei and Kuki communities resulting in the death of more than 180 people.
To quell the disturbances and restore order, General Pande directed the deployment of 135 columns—a significant force comprising approximately 100 personnel each—to dominate sensitive and fringe areas, thereby defusing tensions. This strategic move was part of a broader effort to secure the area and protect civilians from the ongoing violence that had claimed several lives, displaced more than 30,000 people, and left many injured.
The COAS personally visited Manipur on a two-day official trip starting May 27, 2023, to assess the ground situation. During his visit, he engaged with local formation commanders and troops to gain a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced. General Pande also held discussions with key figures such as Governor Anusuiya Uikey, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, and Chief Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh to deliberate on strategies for restoring normalcy as swiftly as possible.
The efforts of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles under General Pande's command have been instrumental in evacuating around 35,000 civilians to safe zones and providing them with immediate relief and humanitarian aid. Despite the initial outbreak of violence being concentrated over a three-day period, sporadic incidents continued, highlighting the deep-seated ethnic divisions within the state. However, the swift and robust response by the military forces has been pivotal in preventing further escalation and working towards reconciliation and peace in the region.
