The Central Young Chakma Association (CYCA), the largest organization representing Mizoram's Chakma community, staged a protest on Sunday in Chawngte, located within the Chakma Autonomous District Council, condemning ongoing violence against indigenous people in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) of Bangladesh.
Alongside the protest, CYCA and several Chakma NGOs submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Chawngte, seeking India’s intervention in the crisis.
The memorandum highlighted violent incidents beginning on September 19, during which nine members of the ethnic Chakma community were reportedly killed in attacks allegedly supported by the Bangladesh army. Over 100 homes and Buddhist temples were burned in Dighinala Sadar and Rangamati, with many residents fleeing to unknown locations.
CYCA President Dr. Jyoti Bikash Chakma condemned the violence, stating, “These inhumane attacks are an assault on our very identity and existence. We cannot remain silent while our people are being systematically targeted in Bangladesh.”
