Mizoram cyclist Vanlallawmzuala Varte enters India Book of Records for 17,000-km journey

Mizoram’s Vanlallawmzuala Varte has earned recognition in the India Book of Records for his 17,000-km 'Ride to Clean Air' journey. Varte (Lza Varte) set records for the 'Shortest Time to Visit All States and Union Territories on a Bicycle to Spread Awareness of Air Pollution' and for achieving the 'Highest Elevation Gained on a Bicycle to Spread Awareness of Air Pollution.'

Vanllallawmzuala Varte, a 34-year-old environmental campaigner, is a resident of Aizawl’s Mission Veng locality who started his journey on January 25, 2024.

In a span of 283 days, Lza Varte traversed the length and breadth of India, covering diverse and challenging terrains, including the highest paved road in the world, Umling La. Along the way, he endured varying climatic conditions, all while delivering his powerful message of environmental responsibility and the urgent need for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Moreover, he was warmly welcomed in all the states and UTs he passed through and was felicitated with honors and recognition for his efforts. He took this opportunity to give speeches at schools, plant trees, and contribute to creating a wave of change within the communities he visited. The Pollution Control Boards of the respective states played a major role in supporting and welcoming him.

During the arduous 9-month journey, the strong sense of camaraderie within the Mizo community stood out. A dedicated Whatsapp group called “ All India Tour Ride to Clean Air” was created bringing together Mizo people from across India. The group became an invaluable support system for Lza Varte during his epic ride. Members of the group provided crucial assistance, from helping with tire changes to mending his clothes and shoes, ensuring he could keep moving forward despite the challenges.

Beyond practical help, the WhatsApp group also served as Lza's virtual companions through every stage of the journey—offering encouragement and support during both the rain and snow, the highs and lows.

Varte has been deeply committed to environmental advocacy while balancing his personal life. He got married in November 2023 but remains actively involved in various environmental campaigns.

An avid adventure enthusiast, LZ is the leader of the Mission Veng Youth Adventure Club and one of the leaders of the Mizoram Cycling Association (MiCA). He is also an executive committee member of the Mission Veng Branch YMA and serves as a Sunday school teacher at his local Presbyterian Church, demonstrating his dedication to both community service and environmental stewardship.
