The Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the forest department of Mizoram's Champhai, on December 17, rescued four exotic De Brazza’s monkeys worth Rs 60 lakh in Zokhawthar, leading efforts against wildlife trafficking.
One individual, identified as a resident of Myanmar was also apprehended in connection with the incident.
Acting on specific intelligence, the operation was carried out near Crossing Point III (Thangkhupa Kai). The troops of COB Zokhawthar launched an ambush in the area, successfully intercepting a trafficker attempting to smuggle the exotic animals across the border.
The suspect, identified as Lalchhanhim (40), a Myanmarese, resident of Tiau, Khawmawi, attempted to flee but was swiftly apprehended by the team.
A thorough search of the area led to the recovery of four exotic monkeys.
The apprehended individual and the rescued animals have been handed over to the forest department for further investigation and legal proceedings.
