Mizoram police destroy drugs worth over Rs 140 crore in anti-trafficking drive

The Mizoram Police marked the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking with a significant drug destruction operation on June 26. In a decisive move against narcotics, the force incinerated drugs valued at approximately Rs 140.80 crore. The destroyed substances included a wide range of narcotics such as heroin, methamphetamine, ganja, crystal meth, opium, alprazolam, and cough syrup.

This action was part of a broader observance of the international day in Aizawl, where the Excise and Narcotics Department also conducted a separate drug destruction event. The department disposed of drugs worth over Rs 39.86 crore, including prescription pills and various illicit substances.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma, speaking at the main function at Vanap Hall, highlighted Mizoram's challenges as a drug smuggling route from Southeast Asia. He emphasised the demographic impact of substance abuse, noting an imbalanced population ratio due to high death rates among Mizo men from drug and alcohol misuse.

Health Minister Lalrinpuii called for a deeper understanding of addiction and suggested using churches as platforms for drug abuse prevention education. The event also saw the Assam Rifles felicitating four recovered addicts, showcasing successful rehabilitation stories.
