Mizoram unveils first common bio medical waste treatment plant

Mizoram has inaugurated its first common bio medical waste treatment plant, marking a significant milestone in the state’s environmental and public health management. The plant, located in Tuirial, was officially opened by UD&PA Minister K. Sapdanga.

The plant, which cost Rs. 9.71 crores, was partially funded by the Centre, contributing Rs. 2 crores to the project. This initiative is part of the Aizawl Smart City Ltd’s efforts in partnership with the Mizoram Pollution Control Board, and it complies with the Bio Medical Waste Management Rules 2016.

Constructed within the Aizawl Municipal Corporation Solid Waste Management Centre, the plant is designed to handle medical waste from hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities across five districts: Aizawl, Kolasib, Mamit, Serchhip, and Saitual. The plant will manage waste collected by special trucks from these areas, ensuring proper disposal and treatment.

In the initial phase, Aizawl Smart City Ltd will oversee a two-month trial run within the AMC area, while the Health & Family Welfare Department will conduct a similar trial in Saitual district.

The new treatment plant is equipped with essential features, including a cleaning facility, a special garbage collection unit, and a 250KVA generator to ensure continuous operation during power outages. It will address various types of medical waste management, including hazardous and infectious waste incineration, sterilization, and chemical air and water treatment.

This development is a crucial step toward enhancing the state’s capability to manage biomedical waste effectively and safeguard public health.
