Entire Nagaland declared as "disturbed area" under AFSPA for 6 more months

KOHIMA: The entire state of Nagaland has been declared as a "disturbed area" under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, the Central Government informed today.

"Whereas the Central Government is of the opinion that the area comprising the whole of the State of Nagaland is in such a disturbed and dangerous condition that the use of armed forces in aid of the civil power is necessary. 2. Now. therefore. in exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. 1958 (No. 28 of 1958) the Central Government hereby declares that whole of the State of Nagaland to be 'disturbed area' for a period of six months with effect from 31 December, 2020," said an official notification.

Yesterday, the Manipur government extended the ‘Disturbed Area’ status in the entire state, barring the Imphal municipal areas, for a period of one year from December 1.

The Home Department issued a notification, saying that the “Disturbed Area” tag was extended following the approval of Manipur’s Governor Dr. Najma Heptulla.

Promulgation of “Disturbed Area” status allows the enforcement of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), giving powers to security forces deployed in the state. The Acts have received criticism from several sections for alleged concerns about human rights violations in the regions of its enforcement.
