FIR Lodged Against 49 Celebs for Writing Open Letter to PM Modi on Mob Lynching

New Delhi, October 4, 2019:

A local advocate of Muzaffarpur has filed a First Information Report (FIR) against 49 celebrities for writing an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the rising mob lynching incidents across the country.

Advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha has lodged the case after the order was passed by Chief Judicial Magistrate Surya Kant Tiwari two months ago.

He said that as many as 49 signatories are allegedly accused of tarnishing the image of the country and undermining the impressive performance of the Prime Minister besides supporting secessionist tendencies.

The list includes Ramachandra Guha, Aparna Sen, Anurag Kashyap, Shyam Benegal and Maniratnam among others. They have been accused under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections relating to sedition, public nuisance, hurting religious feelings and insulting with an intent to provoke breach of peace.

In the letter addressed to PM Modi, the eminent personalities had expressed their concern over rising mob lynching incidents. It said that the lynching of Muslims, Dalits and other minorities must be stopped immediately.

The letter also stressed that there was no democracy without dissent. It also noted that Jai Shri Ram had been reduced to a ‘provocative war cry’, according to reports.

The celebs stated that assault cases had rose to 840 according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
