A gold medalist at West Bengal’s Jadavpur University, Debsmita Chowdhury, tore a copy of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act while receiving her Master’s degree at the annual convocation.
A video has gone viral, wherein the Jadavpur University student, Debsmita Chowdhury is seen walking up to the stage to receive her degree. After she received her degree in International Relations, she requested for a moment from the pro-vice chancellor Pradeep Ghosh and took out a copy of CAA, and tore it up.

She declared, “Hum kaagaz nahi dikhayenge”, meaning “I will not show my papers,” and shouted ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ (long live the revolution). She left the stage with the degree, later.
Debsmita was quoted saying that the protest was not just against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act but against the discriminatory and anti-student policies of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government at the centre.

She clarified that her move was as an individual and had no relation with any political party. It may be mentioned here that Governor Jagdeep Dhankar who is also the chancellor of the university was compelled to leave the campus after Trinamool Congress workers blocked him from attending the convocation.
