Cop seen thrashing elderly Sikh man with stick in Patiala suspended after video goes viral

A disturbing video of a police personnel thrashing an old man near Patiala railway station has surfaced online, inviting condemnation from netizens and local residents. 

The accused cop identified as Sham Lal, who is posted at Anaj Mandi police station in the city has been suspended after the video went viral. One can see in the video the policeman hitting the elderly Sikh man with a stick on the legs. A number of bystanders rush to the man and rescue him.

The elderly man identified as Balvir Singh of Rajgarh village, is a resident of Anang Nagar B of Patiala. The elderly man while speaking to the media said that he makes a living by filling potable water for people. He alleged that the police man was in an inebriate state and was harassing him. Later, the cop started beating him with a stick near the Patiala railway station.

Later in the evening, SSP Patiala Varun Sharma in a statement said the police had taken strict note of the incident.
