Hospitals and shops torched as protest in Bahraich turns violent

The protest following a person's death during Durga idol immersion turned violent in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh, with demonstrators setting hospitals and shops on fire on October 14.

The unrest began when stones were hurled, and gunshots were fired at the procession, igniting a fierce retaliation from the crowd.

The deceased, identified as Ram Gopal Mishra from Rehua Mansoor village, was critically injured by a gunshot while participating in the immersion ritual and later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

The incident sparked outrage and chaos across Bahraich, with enraged protesters setting fire to a hospital, shops, and several vehicles. The escalation prompted a swift response from law enforcement, who resorted to using force in an attempt to disperse the crowd and restore order. At least 30 individuals were taken into custody, including a local resident named Salman, from whose house shots were allegedly fired during the altercation.

Amidst the tense situation, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath assured stringent action against those responsible for inciting the unrest and directed officials to maintain law and order. He emphasized the importance of coordinating with religious organizations to ensure the peaceful completion of the remaining idol immersions and prevent further conflict.

Authorities remain on high alert, with increased security measures in place to prevent any potential flare-ups as tensions continue to simmer in the district.
