Kiren Rijiju slams Congress on EVM controversy, labels it as 'political posturing'

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has sharply criticized Congress for questioning the credibility of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Rijiju remarked, “Congress formed the government twice, in 2004 and 2009, using EVMs. Moreover, all Congress MPs questioning EVMs today were themselves elected through the same machines. Are they implying their own elections were undemocratic and conducted via faulty systems?”

Rijiju further accused Congress of indulging in baseless political maneuvering, stating, “Congress has run out of genuine issues and is now resorting to unnecessary politicking over EVMs.” The remarks come amidst a growing debate over the reliability of EVMs in electoral processes.

The Congress has reignited the debate over the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in elections, calling for a return to traditional ballot papers. During the special parliamentary debate on the Constitution last week, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in her opening address, emphasized the need to restore the ballot paper system, stating, “Then see what happens.”

The party has also lodged multiple complaints with the Election Commission, alleging irregularities in the recently concluded Maharashtra and Haryana Assembly elections. The renewed push comes amid ongoing discussions over the reliability of EVMs, with Congress positioning itself as a vocal critic of the system.
