'Ready to resign': West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over RG Kar crisis

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee offered her resignation on Thursday, September 12, citing frustration over the unresolved crisis at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Banerjee expressed her willingness to step down "for the sake of the people" and reiterated her call for justice following the murder of a doctor at the hospital.

Addressing a press conference, Banerjee apologised to the people of Bengal for the ongoing impasse, stating, "I apologise to the people of Bengal who expected an end to the RG Kar deadlock today. The junior doctors came to Nabanna but did not sit for the meeting. I urge them to return to work."

The chief minister also mentioned her efforts to engage with the junior doctors, saying she waited three days for them to hold discussions, even after the Supreme Court's ruling for them to resume work. Despite their refusal, Banerjee said no disciplinary action has been taken yet, emphasising the need for patience and tolerance.

"Though, 3 days passed after the Supreme Court verdict but we are not taking any disciplinary action because sometimes we have to tolerate," the chief minister said.

Banerjee further expressed her frustration, saying, "I am ready to resign for the sake of the people, as despite my best intentions and efforts, the medics declined to hold talks." She underlined the need for justice for both the common people and the medical staff, urging the doctors to resume their duties in compliance with the court's orders.
