Earlier, Indian football legend turned politician Bhaichung Bhutia on September 13 stated the reason for his joining the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front party (SDF). He further stated that the final call of his joining date and the merger of his Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP) with SDF will only be finalised after talking with his party workers.

Bhaichung reasoned "I think the way SKM is running the state in last four years including complete dilution of Article 371F which we have seen with the finance act, and Sikkimese identity row and government have been completely lost and lot of things, without discussing in assembly One Nation One Ration Card and no any statement on the uniform civil code UCC".
