Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) state chief, DR Thapa voiced concerns over rising unemployment attributing it to the proliferation of substandard universities in the region. Thapa highlighted the pressing need for high-quality educational institutions to address the escalating unemployment crisis in the state.
Thapa highlighted the detrimental impact of inadequate universities on Sikkim's workforce stating the absence of University Grants Commission (UGC) affiliated institutions in the state. He lamented the prevalence of universities that merely confer degrees without imparting substantial knowledge or education urging the government to prioritize the establishment of reputable, UGC-accredited universities.
"The current state of unemployment in Sikkim can largely be attributed to the influx of subpar universities," remarked Thapa stating the pivotal role of education in shaping the future of Sikkim's youth.
Expressing dismay over the lack of stringent standards in university accreditation,Thapa called for a thorough vetting process to ensure that educational institutions uphold quality standards and deliver holistic learning experiences.
Thapa's concerns were echoed in his interactions with the government where he advocated for the establishment of well-recognized universities across Sikkim's constituencies. Despite the government's initiative to introduce nine private universities, Thapa cautioned against compromising educational standards for quantity stating the paramount importance of universities in nurturing competent professionals.
