Sikkim CM Tamang raises key developmental issues at NEC Plenary meet in Agartala

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, during the 72nd Plenary Meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) on December 21, emphasised the need for strategic interventions to accelerate the region's development.
 

The meeting, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah brought together leaders from across the region to discuss priorities for sustainable growth.
 

Describing the meeting as an "honour and privilege," Tamang expressed gratitude for the Union Government's continued support and outlined critical issues affecting Sikkim. He spoke on the importance of collective efforts in achieving the national vision of Viksit Bharat-2047, while expressing appreciation for the Union Budget 2024-25, which aligns with this mission.
 

The chief minister stressed the crucial role of tourism and the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sectors in Sikkim’s economy and requested strong Central support to improve tourism infrastructure and foster development. A pilot project under the aegis of NEC was proposed to promote tourism and entrepreneurship, with a special focus on ecotourism.
 

Tamang also called for the reopening of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through Sikkim and suggested establishing an Integrated Check Post and a Multimodal Corridor at Chiwa Bhanjyang on the Nepal border to boost trade and connectivity.
 

Addressing infrastructure challenges, he urged swift action to resolve disruptions along NH10 caused by the Teesta floods and river silting. He also sought expedited completion of the railway project and structural improvements at Pakyong Airport to ensure all-weather connectivity.
 

Speaking on Sikkim’s upcoming Golden Jubilee Year of Statehood on May 16, 2025, Tamang expressed pride in the state's achievements over five decades. He also praised the Central Government for initiatives like the UNNATI Scheme 2024, aimed at creating employment opportunities for youth.
 

Tamang extended gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the NEC, and the Tripura Government for their hospitality and smooth organization of the meeting.
 

"The visionary guidance of the Home Minister and collaborative efforts among the northeastern states are key to building a sustainable and prosperous future for our region," Tamang said.
