Sikkim: Gangtok's TV tower set for dismantling due to structural issues

The iconic TV tower in Gangtok standing tall at 100 meters since its completion in 1991, is set to undergo a dismantling process by June this year. The decision comes as a result of structural concerns with the topmost 44-meter steel section slated for removal by January 2024, followed by the remaining 56-meter concrete part.

Neeraj Kumar Pandey, Deputy Director (Engineering) stated while speaking to reporters, "Our 100-meter tower established in 1991 has faced a gradual decline in its structural integrity. Specialist assessments from Chennai, Shillong, and Gangtok deemed it to be in an alarming position coming to a decision to dismantle it."

The tower has been a crucial hub for various services, hosting DD News and DD National broadcasts, SIB repeater antenna, BSNL BTS tower and three FM services including Red FM, Radio Mirchi and Akashvani FM.

Pandey continued, "The tower's incline was closely monitored since 1991. The final report from the Chennai specialist urged us to take immediate action. In October 2023, discussions were held with the Chief Secretary to address potential emergency scenarios such as earthquakes or natural disasters."

To ensure a smooth transition, the authorities have initiated the dismantling process, starting with the 44-meter steel structure. Pandey assured, "Extra precautions will be taken during the demolition process considering the safety of nearby structures and residents."

Temporary arrangements have been made, with all services shifted to the FM building using temporary antennas. By June 2024, a new steel structure is expected to be in place, accommodating the services previously hosted by the iconic tower.

Currently hosting DD News and DD National broadcasts, as well as regional services in the evening the tower has been a vital communication hub for the region. The upcoming demolition will be open for tender bids allowing authorities to select the most suitable bidder for the task.
