Lingchom -Tingda Social Organization has taken an initiative to clean the 7 km stretch of North Sikkim highway from the Bridge-2 entry point to Lingchom village.
It was conducted under the guidance of Tshewang Phurba Sherpa, a member of Gram Panchayat.
Speaking on the occasion, Sherpa said that the organization took this initiative after seeing passengers throwing plastic wrappers and other garbage from their vehicles which accumulated on the roadside.
''This dirt on the roadside gives a bad impression and we all know that the first impression is the last impression. Hence, we decided to clean the 7 km stretch of North Sikkim highway from its entry point Bridge -2 to Lingchom,'' he added.
He further said that through this cleanliness drive, they want to send a message to people to refrain from throwing waste randomly along the highway.
''We also want to appeal to drivers of vehicles, especially tourist vehicles to keep the dustbin in the vehicles so that waste can be collected there and disposed of later at the right place,'' Sherpa said.
On the other hand, Norpo Sherpa Working President of Lingchom -Tingda Social Organization, shared, "The thought is simple that we should keep our surroundings clean. We are a social organization and we have nearly 50 members. We carried out a cleanliness drive to send a message to people. This might be a small step but if we all start doing this in our locality it will maintain the cleanliness of their localities''.
