Indra Hang Subba, Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) representing Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, expressed strong support for the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024, during a discussion in the Lok Sabha. The bill aims to strengthen disaster management frameworks, which Subba emphasized is crucial for vulnerable regions like Sikkim that frequently face natural disasters such as landslides and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
Subba stressed the urgent need for enhanced preventive measures to mitigate GLOF risks, which endanger lives and livelihoods in the region. He highlighted the importance of local governance, calling for a framework to facilitate involvement of MLAs and panchayats in disaster mitigation planning and decision-making processes.
Subba commended the government's efforts and expressed optimism that the bill's amendments will strengthen the disaster management system and benefit vulnerable regions like Sikkim. He reiterated his commitment to working collectively to build a safer and more resilient future for all citizens.
