Sikkim observes 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya pays floral tributes to Bapu

Sikkim commemorated the 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang paying their respects to the Father of the Nation by offering floral tribute to the bust of Mahatma Gandhi at M.G. Marg, today.

Cabinet Ministers, MLAs, other dignitaries, Chief Secretary, DGP, and heads of departments also offered floral tribute to the Father of The Nation.

On the occasion, awards were presented to the cleanest Urban Local Bodies (ULB) in the State with Mangan Nagar Panchayat being recognised as the first cleanest ULB, Rangpo Nagar Panchayat as the second and Singtam Nagar Panchayat as the third cleanest ULB.

In recognition of their exemplary efforts, cash award of Rs. 10 lakh, Rs. 7 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh were presented to the three ULBs bagging the first, second and third ranks, respectively.

Likewise, seven best performing safaimitras were also honoured for their resounding efforts in promoting cleanliness and sanitation. They are Basu Darjee (Gangtok Municipal Corporation), Phurba Tamang (Namchi Municipal Corporation), Ganshyam Rawat (Nayabazar-Jorethang Municipal Corporation), Parvati Sarki (Rangpo Municipal Corporation), Dal Bdr Chettri (Singtam Municipal Corporation), Suraj Darjee (Mangan Municipal Corporation) and Harka Bdr Sanyasi (Geyzing Municipal Corporation).

In the cleanest village category, Lingtam Phadamchen GPU, Regu Block, Pakyong bagged the top rank and received cash award of Rs. 5 lakh while Rongay Tathangchen GPU, Nandok Block, Gangtok secured the second position and received award of Rs. 3 lakh. Gelling Baiguney GPU, Baiguney block, Soreng and Sanganath GPU, Sikkip Block, Namchi both secured the third position and received cash award of Rs. 1 lakh each.

The constitution of these awards and incentives in various categories by the State Government under the vision and guidance of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang have encouraged all stakeholders and have brought about visible results in the overall cleanliness of the State.

Books on compendium of Rules on Solid Waste Management and Plastic Waste Management were also released on the occasion.
