Sikkim received year's first snowfall on January 16 with snow accumulating upto 2 inches at several key spots of the state, transforming the landscape into a picturesque winter wonderland.
The forecast had predicted a series of snowfall events, with the region experiencing flurries from December 20 to 22 and again from December 25 to 29 in the previous year. The chilly embrace of winter continued into 2024, with snow gracing the state from January 2 to 4, January 8 to 10, and it is currently ongoing from January 12 to 17, with more expected from January 20 to 29.
The current climate in Gangtok, Sikkim, is generally clear with a high of 24°C, accompanied by variable southwesterly winds. However, this clarity belies the cold that grips the region, especially in higher altitudes where temperatures can plummet. In fact, some areas such as the Lachen and Thangu valley, known as the coldest towns in North Sikkim, can experience temperatures as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius during winter.
Tourists seeking the serene beauty of snow-covered landscapes are drawn to Sikkim during these months. Popular destinations like Gurudongmar Lake, Tsomgo Lake, Zero Point, Yumthang Valley, and Zuluk become blanketed in snow, offering breathtaking views. Despite the severe cold, these places remain alluring, with Gurudongmar Lake being particularly notable for a portion of its waters that never freeze, even in the harshest of winters.
While the snowfall adds to the enchantment of Sikkim, it also brings challenges. At least 900 tourists were stranded along the J N Road after heavy snowfall disrupted road communication, highlighting the impact on the tourism sector.
The best time to visit North Sikkim is typically from May to September when the weather is moderate. However, for those who wish to experience the magic of snowfall, December through February is the ideal period. It's important to note that while the average temperature in Sikkim during winter ranges from 10°C to 4°C, it can drop to freezing at high altitudes, with some areas remaining closed due to the extreme conditions.
