On December 2, 2023, at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, Sikkim's innovative environmental initiative "Mero Rukh Mero Santati" was highlighted on the global stage.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang of Sikkim delivered a compelling video message at the India Pavilion, emphasizing the state's dedication to environmental sustainability and the urgent need for international cooperation in combating climate change.
In his address, Chief Minister Tamang conveyed the challenges faced by Sikkim due to climate change, including altered weather patterns and a recent flash flood in the River Teesta, underscoring the immediacy of global climate action. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts across nations, communities, and individuals to foster a green economy and achieve net-zero emissions.

The "Mero Rukh Mero Santati" program, which involves planting 108 trees for every newborn child in Sikkim, represents a unique approach to creating a lasting green legacy. This initiative not only celebrates new life but also contributes to carbon neutrality and reinforces the spiritual and cultural connection with nature. The program's presentation at COP28 marked a significant moment for Sikkim, as it was the first time a policy from the state was featured at a side event at the conference, showcasing Sikkim's proactive role in environmental conservation on an international platform.
