Sikkim Roads and Bridges Minister and MLA, Samdup Lepcha, ziplined across a flood-hit river in a rare display of commitment to his constituents amid the flood mayhem that has left vast trail destruction in the state.
Lepcha is the representative of Lachen Mangan constituency, Chungthang, where parts of the 1200-MW Teesta III Dam were washed away by flash floods.
On Saturday October 7, Lepcha led a team from Pegong village in Mangan district to Chungthang, where locals have reported inadequate relief efforts. The only log bridge to Chungthang got washed away, prompting Lepcha and his team to take the only available route, a temporary zipline.
A video shows Lepcha suspended from the zipline over the flooded Chungthang River. The team, including the Deputy Inspector General of Police and Chungthang's Sub-Divisional Magistrate, were the first senior officials to reach the isolated town since the flash floods.
