Agartala, November 2, 2019:

The Bru community in Tripura continues to suffer after the Government of India cut off their supply lines in a bid to repatriate the Brus to their original land, Mizoram.

One of the residents of the camps told Inside Northeast, "Three people have fallen unconscious in a single day, as they have not had any food for a week. 67 persons are here, and they have not had a single morsel of rice."

"These poor people are dwelling in a remote area, and after the repatriation measures, the Government of India has not given them a single morsel", the Bru representative said, adding, "The Government not fulfilled a single demand, and the demand for an autonomous district has not fulfilled. Moreover, the govt of Mizoram is listening to youth organizations, and acting against Bru interests."

Recently, more than 500 Bru refugees staged massive protests and blocked roads in Tripura after two people starved to death due to food scarcity.

The refugees took to the streets of Lakkhipur and Anandabazaar areas in Tripura after a month of food scarcity. It may be mentioned here that the state government had stopped food supply to the refugees after they refused to repatriate to Mizoram.

Ration supplies, cash dole, and other benefits were halted to six Bru relief camps in North Tripura district since October 3. This is the third time that the supply of food has been stopped for the refugees in the state.
