Tripura Police on Saturday late night has arrested a Bangladeshi woman who had crossed the international border after marrying a resident of Tripura in the neighboring country.
Tripura shares an 856km long international boundary with Bangladesh.
The woman was apprehended in Kadamtala under the Dharmanagar Sub-division of Tripura’s North district.
Commenting on the incident, Sibu Ranjan Dey, Officer-in-Charge of Kadamtala Police Station, stated that Border Security Force (BSF) jawans and Tripura Police jointly detained Joli Rani Das (25), a Bangladeshi woman, for illegally entering Tripura from Bangladesh.
"Sudhanshu Das (50), a resident of Ward No. 5 of Bajendra Nagar Village Panchayat in the Kadamtala Police Station area, crossed the international border with Joli Rani Das. They got married in Bangladesh and illegally crossed the border. The two developed a relationship during Sudhangshu Das's visit to Bangladesh a year ago. Their love story culminated in marriage at a local Jagannath temple in Bangladesh on the 17th of this month," explained the police officer.
He mentioned that the situation took a legal turn upon their return to India.
"Another individual, Sushil Das, assisted Sudhangshu and the woman in crossing the border illegally. Although Sushil and Sudhangshu are residents of Tripura, they crossed the border unlawfully. Both accused individuals are currently on the run, but we have arrested the woman," the police officer informed reporters.
The detained Bangladeshi woman will be presented before the court today.
