Tripura Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Sushanta Deb celebrated his birthday on November 13 by adopting a Royal Bengal Tiger at the Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary & Zoo for the next three months.
Deb adopted the Royal Bengal Tiger named Shera, who arrived seven months ago from North Bengal.
As per the policy, MLA Deb will be responsible for the food, medicines, and other expenses of the tiger for the next three months.
Speaking at the occasion, Sushanta said, “Since childhood, I always wanted to be engaged in social work. This is my second birthday since becoming an MLA. Everyone works for society, but animals also have a life. To maintain a balance in the environment, we must give love to animals. This is why I have come here to Sepahijala Wildlife Sanctuary & Zoo.”
Further, he added that he had approached the department for adoption, and received permission after three months following the due process.
Zoo Director Biswajit Das shared that the zoo spends Rs 7.70 lakh annually on food and medicine for the tiger.
“We have an animal adoption scheme that started five years ago. The MLA requested adoption, but it was not possible initially due to some issues. After further requests, the PCCF and Chief Wildlife Warden granted permission. About Rs 2 lakh would be needed for three months. I want to thank the MLA as he adopted the tiger on his birthday and urge everyone to come forward to adopt animals, as it will benefit the zoo,” he added.
