Tripura Club Secretary Murder Row: Locals stage protest in court, demands capital punishment of key suspect

Many people from the Usha Bazar area in Agartala protested in front of the West District and Sessions Judge Court, demanding capital punishment for Raju Barman, the key suspect in the sensational murder case of Durga Prasanna Deb, who was the club secretary of Tripura’s renowned social club Bharat Ratna Sangha located in Usha Bazar.

On April 30, Durga Prasanna Deb, also known as Vicky (35), was shot dead at point-blank range. Soon after the murder, the police arrested seven people in connection with the case, including former club president Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury, Sushmita Sarkar, Uma Sarkar, Birchakra Ghosh, Sani Saha, Sandip Kar, and Rakesh Barman. Among them, Birchakra Ghosh, Sandip Kar, and Rakesh Barman were arrested in Kolkata.

On Wednesday, Tripura Police arrested the prime accused, Raju Barman, in Guwahati and brought him back to Agartala on Thursday evening. Today, the police produced him before the West District and Sessions Judge Court, seeking 10 days of police remand.

Meanwhile, many people, including the wife of the deceased Durga Prasanna Deb, gathered in the court premises to stage a protest. “We want his capital punishment. He should not get bail. When Durga Prasanna was alive, Raju Barman called him various times and threatened him with pistols. I want his capital punishment. I want to appeal to the government for capital punishment, and if he gets bail, then many more will die,” said the wife of Durga Prasanna Deb.

Another local, Biswajit Das, said, “We have come here from the Usha Bazar area. Raju Barman and his group killed our former Bharat Ratna Sangha club secretary, Durga Prasanna Deb. We are demanding from the Home Minister and Chief Minister, Prof. Dr Manik Saha, to look into this and take action to prevent further violence.”
