Tripura: Couple dies after mud wall collapse due to heavy rain, two children hospitalized

A husband and wife lost their lives while two of their children sustained severe injuries when the mud wall of their house collapsed in Meghlipara, under Old Agartala in the West District, Tripura. The incident highlights the devastating impact of the ongoing heavy rains in the region.

The family recounted the experience to reporters. "When we heard the sound, we came out of the house and saw the incident. We rushed to the spot to rescue them and took them to the Ranirbazar Primary Health Care Center. From there, the on-duty doctors referred them to GB Pant Hospital. The doctors said that Jhuma Tanti died on the spot; however, Pranesh was still alive but died after a few hours," said a family member.

Dr. Vishal Kumar, the West District Magistrate, arrived at the scene to provide support and assess the situation. "Last night, after a mud wall of a house collapsed due to heavy rain, two persons, identified as Pranesh Tanti and Jhuma Tanti, died in the Meghlipara area, while two of their children, including a three-month-old and a 9-year-old, sustained severe injuries and are undergoing treatment. After the incident, we rushed to the spot and provided interim relief. We are taking care of the children. This is indeed a very tragic incident. The government will provide all possible help to the family of the deceased," he stated.

The local MLA, Ratan Chakraborty, who is also the former speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, visited the injured children at GB Pant hospital. He expressed his condolences and sorrow over the heartbreaking event. "This is a really tragic incident. Two members of the same family died after the mud wall of their home collapsed on them due to heavy rain. I have no words to express the sorrow," Chakraborty said, as heavy rains continue to batter Tripura.
