Tripura police arrest one with cannabis worth Rs 1.3 crore at Assam border

The Tripura police, in a late night operation on April 18 arrested an individual, seizing cannabis worth Rs 1.3 crore in North Tripura district.
 

The arrest was made at Churaibri Check Post which serves as the gate way of Assam-Tripura border.
 

Acting on a specific tip-off, the Tripura Police intercepted a truck at Churaibari Check Post and seized 345 kilograms of dry cannabis concealed inside a puppet manufacturing machine. 
 

The estimated black market value of the contraband is Rs 1.03 crore.
 

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), North District, Jeremia Darlong said, “We received credible information regarding a truck smuggling a large consignment of cannabis. Based on the input, the vehicle was stopped at Churaibari Check Post. Upon inspection, we initially found a puppet manufacturing machine, but a strong smell of dry cannabis prompted a more thorough search.”
 

He said that upon dismantling the machine, officials discovered 69 packets of cannabis hidden inside.
 

“The driver of the truck, identified as Monita Mohan Jamatia (45), a resident of Teliamura in Khowai District, has been arrested. During preliminary interrogation, he confessed that the consignment was loaded from the Padmabil area of Khowai and was en route to other states via Assam”, said the ASP.
 

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the NDPS Act and further investigation is underway to trace the network involved in the smuggling.
