Tripura police seize cannabis worth Rs 15 lakh in border village, one arrested

In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown against narcotics, Tripura Police early on Friday morning seized 325 kilograms of dried ganja from a residence in Ananda Nagar under Sonamura Sub-division of Tripura’s Sepahijala District and arrested one.

Sonamura Sub-division shares a major portion of the international border with Bangladesh.

The estimated market value of the seized contraband is between Rs 15 lakh.

The raid was carried out by a special team led by Sonamura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jayanta Kumar Dey, following inputs from intelligence sources. The team included DCM Prabir Saha, Inspector Biplob Debbarma, SI Tapan Das, and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel.

OC Jayanta Kumar Dey said that the operation began with a search inside the house of Manjil Hossain, the alleged owner, but initial efforts yielded little.

“However, the team later began digging in the yard, where they discovered seven plastic drums buried underground—each packed with dried ganja. During preliminary interrogation, Manjil Hossain reportedly confessed that the ganja was stored for smuggling purposes to different parts of the country. He has been taken into custody and further investigations are underway to trace other potential links in the drug network”, said the OC.

He said that this huge quantity of cannabis has been seized due to the relentless efforts of intelligence department.

“Our aim is to adopt a zero-tolerance policy against drugs. This operation is a reflection of our sense of responsibility and commitment. Such operations will be continued regularly in the future as well”, he added.
