NORTHERN CARDINAL
The Northern Cardinal is probably the most well-known red bird in North America, despite the fact that they only range from the Eastern United States to the Southwest and the Rockies.
SCARLET TANAGER
Scarlet Tanagers, native to Eastern US, have bright red and black coloring, while females are yellow-green. Males molt feathers after breeding, and migrate south into Western South America and the Andes mountain range.
VERMILLION FLYCATCHER
The Vermillion Flycatcher, a small insect-eating bird, is native to desert habitats in Mexico, with males easily recognized and females having a pinkish patch. They can be seen north along the Gulf Coast and in Southern Texas.
HOUSE FINCH
The House Finch, a common visitor to backyard feeders in the US, is known for its simple songs and recognizable red and brown plumage. Males have a red head and neck, while females are brown and white streaked.
SUMMER TANAGER
The Summer Tanager, a bird found in the eastern US south of the Great Lakes and in western states like California, Arizona, and New Mexico, is larger than its scarlet counterpart.
PINE GROSBEAK
The Pine Grosbeak, a bird native to Canada and the northern Rocky Mountains, lives in spruce and fir forests, often spotted in bushes for berries or fruit.
RED WARBLER
The Red Warbler, a striking bird found in highland areas of southern and western Mexico, prefers pine, fir, and oak forests, with slightly paler females.
SCARLET IBIS
The Scarlet Ibis, native to South America, is a red waterbird known for foraging in marshes and lawns. They call only while flying and are unlikely to visit feeders. Some interbreed with White ibis, creating a bright pink hybrid.
‘I’IWI (SCARLET HONEYCREEPER)
The red honeycreeper, found only on Hawaii's islands, is a "altitudinal migrants" with a pink hooked bill, black wings, tail, and long, curved bill. They travel to higher elevations to reach nectar inside flowers.
PYRRHULOXIA
Pyrrhuloxias, closely related to the Northern Cardinal, are found in northern Mexico, western Texas, southern Arizona, southern New Mexico, and the Baja Peninsula.
