Ambubachi Mela is an annual Hindu gathering held at the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam.
It takes place during the month of June, coinciding with the monsoon season.
The festival celebrates the annual menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, the presiding deity of the temple.
The Kamakhya Temple does not have an idol but worships the goddess in the form of a yoni-like stone.
Ambubachi Mela is also known as Ameti or the Tantric Fertility Festival and is significant to the Tantric Shakti cult.
The festival lasts for four days, during which the Kamakhya temple remains closed.
Members of the cult remain in seclusion throughout the year and make a public appearance only during the festival.
The festival symbolizes the childbearing capabilities of women and the fertility of Mother Earth.
The Ambubachi Mela was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but will be held in 2023 starting from June 26th.
The Kamakhya Temple is located in Guwahati, Assam, near the Brahmaputra River and is one of the 51 holy shrines of the Shakti cult.
