During the reign of the Ahoms, from the 13th century to the 19th century, massive Pyramid-like structures were built that are commonly called ‘Pyramids of Assam’
These structures were mainly built as a burial ground for the Ahom Kings and their Queens
After the death of the rulers, even their precious belongings were kept along with their bodies in these burial structures
There are over 42 tombs of the kings and queens at the hill top of Charaideo
Charaideo was the capital of the Ahom dynasty which was built by Sukapha
The tombs’ architecture is often compared with the Egyptian pyramids as it reflects the excellent works done by the masons of Assam
However, the highlight of this architecture is the octagonal dwarf which encloses the entire tomb or maidam
The vaults on the underground and chambers are filled with delicate floral architecture
Charaideo Maidams is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites
