Ancient sites in Northeast associated with Mahabharata and Ramayana era

Bhasmacala or Umananda Temple, Assam Legends say, Bhasmacala or Peacock Island, is the very spot where Kamdev interrupted Lord Shiva’s meditation and subsequently Lord Shiva burnt Kamdev to ashes after opening his third eye. The Peacock Island is also famous as the world’s smallest inhabited river island.

Mawjymbuin Cave, Meghalaya This cave is home to a gigantic formation of stalagmite, resembling the shape of a ‘Shivalingam’. This cave is close to Weiloi Village, some one and half kilometers from the Ranikor-Balat-Mawsynram-Shillong Highway in Northeast India.

Malinithan, Arunachal Pradesh According to legends, this Hindu temple dates back to the Mahabharata period and is said to be the very spot where Lord Krishna and Rukmini got married. Impressed by the garlands offered by Goddess Parvati to the newly married couple, Lord Krishna called Goddess Parvati as 'Sucharu Malini'. Thus the site became popular as Malinithan 

Sita Jakhala, Assam Believed to be an ancient Ramayana site situated in Assam's Morigaon, Sita Jakhala or Sita's Ladder, as per legends is considered to be the site where Lord Ram is said to have brought his wife Mother Sita to this spot after returning from Lanka 

Aswakranta Temple, Assam Situated in the heart of Janardan Mountain beside the mighty Brahmaputra in North Guwahati, Assam, the Aswakranta Temple bears footprints of Mahabharata period which is believed to bore hoofprints of horses of Krishna's chariot which is still visible

Parshuram Kund, Arunachal Pradesh This popular Hindu pilgrimage site has a dark legend behind its name. As per mythology, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Parshuram, had beheaded his mother on the orders of his father. Upon learning his heinous crime, he went and took a holy dip in the sacred kund to repent his sins.  

Basistha Temple, Assam Sage Vashishtha was one of the most revered Saptarishis who taught King Dashratha's sons Lord Ram, Lakshman, Bharat and Shatrughan in the Ramayana era. According to legends, sage Vashishtha is said to have meditated inside an ashram inside the Garbhanga reserve forest in Guwahati, where a sunken garbagriha stands testament to the legend
