Barak Valley is the southernmost region of Assam, named after the Barak River that flows through it. The Barak River itself gets its name from Dimasa words meaning "bifurcation" and "upper portion/stream.
The Barak Valley is divided into three districts: Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. Silchar, the largest city in the Barak Valley, is located in Cachar district.
Barak Valley has a distinct cultural identity with Bengali being the dominant language. The region also has a rich tribal heritage with the Dimasa people being the indigenous inhabitants.
The Barak Valley has a long and interesting history. Karimganj district was once part of Sylhet district in British India before being incorporated into India after the 1947 partition. There is a long-standing demand for a separate Barak statehood to address issues of perceived neglect compared to the Brahmaputra Valley in Assam.
