The Monpa tribe of Arunachal Pradesh perform the folk dance popularly known as Lion and Peacock dance.
In this dance the gait and movements of animals are imitated by the dancers. Two groups are formed which are accompanied with a drummer each.
The masks of cock and the lion heads are worn by the dancers. The musical instruments which are used in the dance are gongs and cymbals. Many stories related to animals are portrayed in the dance.
Wearing the lion and peacock masks, the dancers create a carnival atmosphere where in the other people join.
While enacting the story of animals, the dancers mimic the animal movements as they celebrate this dance.
