Cotton University, formerly known as Cotton College, is a premier institute of higher learning in Assam.
It was established in 1901 by Sir Henry Stedman Cotton, the Chief Commissioner of Assam.
In 1948, it became a constituent college of Gauhati University.
Cotton College played a significant role in the freedom movement and cultural engagements of Assam, establishing its identity as an integral component of India.
In 2011, Cotton College State University was established as a constituent of the college.
The Cotton University Act, 2017 enabled the unification of Cotton College State University and Cotton College, leading to the formation of Cotton University.
It started with five professors and 39 students.
On October 16, 1992, Cotton College was declared a center of excellence and became a post-graduate college
The college celebrated its centennial from May 27, 2001, to May 26, 2002, with various programs and the release of a commemorative postage stamp.
The Cotton University Act, 2017 merged Cotton College State University and Cotton College, resulting in the renaming of the institution to Cotton University.
