New Covid variant JN.1, that has been causing a spike in cases in US since September this year, has now been detected in India.

Pirola is the nickname of a new BA.2.86 variant, which was recently designated. It has been found that Pirola is a highly mutating variant of Omicron, with more than 30 mutations and it has triggered a surge in cases worldwide, especially in parts of Europe and the United States.

1. Cough: Persistent coughing can be a common symptom. 2. Cold: Symptoms of a common cold, such as a runny or stuffy nose, may be observed. 3. Throat pain: Sore throat or discomfort in the throat is reported.

4. Headache: Individuals infected with the JN1 variant may experience headaches. 5. Loose motions: Gastrointestinal symptoms, like loose motions (diarrhoea), may occur. 6. Mild breathlessness: Some individuals may experience occasional mild breathlessness.

There is currently no indication that JN.1 produces more severe disease than other virus strains. It's more contagious, which could lead to more infections.

According to the WHO, current vaccines will continue to protect against severe sickness caused by JN.1 and other circulating forms of the COVID-19 virus.

The Centre issued an advisory to states after the first case of the new coronavirus sub-variant JN.1 was detected in Kerala. “Considering the upcoming festive season, there is a need to put in requisite public health measures and other arrangements to minimise the risk in transmission of the disease by adherence to maintenance of respiratory hygiene," the advisory stated.
