West Jaintia Hills District was established on July 31, 2012, following the division of the former Jaintia Hills District. Its headquarters is in Jowai. The district covers 1693 sq.km

East Khasi Hills is a district in Meghalaya, covering 2,748 sq.km. It is located between 25°07” & 25°41” N and 91°21” & 92°09” E. Shillong, the district headquarters and state capital, is a scenic hill station and year-round resort.

West Khasi Hills District, centrally located in Meghalaya between East Khasi Hills and East Garo Hills, covers 5,247 sq.km. Nongstoin is the district headquarters, with Mairang and Mawkyrwat as its two civil sub-divisions.

East Garo Hills District, with its headquarters at Williamnagar, was established in 1976 and became fully operational in 1977. Covering 630 sq.km, it has a population of over 260,000.

South Garo Hills District, one of Meghalaya's newest districts, was created on June 1, 1992, by splitting from West Garo Hills District. Covering 1887 sq.km, it has a population of 99,105. Baghmara serves as the district headquarters.

Ri-Bhoi District was established on June 4, 1992, by upgrading the Nongpoh Sub-Division. Covering 2,448 sq.km, it has a population of about 193,000, comprising Khasis, Garos, Mikirs, and other tribes.

Eastern West Khasi Hills is situated about 25 kilometers west of Shillong. It was established in 2021 by splitting from the existing West Khasi Hills district. Mairang serves as the district headquarters.
