Gobekli Tepe: The world's first temple

It is located iin the city of Sanliurfa in southeastern Turkey, near the border with Syria. City was known as Edessa in ancient times and was the center of Syrian Christianity.

Location

Gobekli Tepe is one of the most astonishing archaeological discoveries. The entire area where the excavations are located is hilly, but only one of the hills has been considered sacred for generations.

Significance

. The hill is 15 meters high and 984 x 984 feet in size, was used for agricultural purposes. Stones were moved from the site when farmers subdivided the land for cultivation.

Construction and use

Gobekli Tepe was built during the Neolithic period. Megalithic structures there are the oldest known to archeology. Hunter-gatherer people constructed all the enormous objects at Gobekli Tepe.

Time period

Göbeklitepe has great importance for being the center of the first belief. Archeologists have detected 20 temples and just 6 of 20 temples come to light in this construction.

Oldest temple

Göbeklitepe is 7500 years older than artwork and temple known. The oldest temple known until the discovery of Göbeklitepe is located in Malta and it is 5000 years old.

Oldest artwork

Instead of hunting pictures on cave walls, these cave walls have only animal reliefs. It impressively reflects a different artistic perspective.

Artwork style

As a result of the surveys in the Region, the ancestor of wheat is an important cultural plant and it has hundreds of genetic variations, was first raised at the foothills of Göbeklitepe.
