Major Durga Malla was the first Gorkha soldier from the Indian National Army (INA) to sacrifice his life for Indian independence.
He belonged to the Thakuri ethnic group, a valiant community from Gorkha and Nepal.
Even before joining the INA, Malla was actively involved in anti-British activities during his student days.
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose recognized his potential and promoted him to Major for his leadership and dedication.
Captured by the British in 1944, Malla was court-martialed and sentenced to death. He was executed on August 25, 1944, becoming a symbol of India's freedom struggle.
