Green Crackers: Go Green This Diwali!

Green Crackers are environmentally friendly fireworks and can reduce the air pollution caused by traditional firecrackers.

Why Green Crackers?

CSIR-NEERI defines green crackers as fireworks with a reduced shell size, without use of ash, low usage of raw materials and additives such as dust suppresants to reduce emissions.

What are Green Crackers?

Look for the CSIR-NEERI logo on the fireworks packaging to identify bonafide green crackers.

How to Identify Them?

Green crackers have low thermite content, and minimum usage of aluminium. They dont contain barium compounds which are used to get the green colour. Green crackers use potassium nitrate as an oxidant.

Difference from Conventional Crackers

The green-crackers are expected to cause atleast 30 per cent less air pollution in comparison to the traditional firecrackers.

Less Air Pollution

The main motive of producing green crackers is to control the environmental disbalance.

Environmental Balance

Every year the air quality has been declining and what may seem like fog during the winters is actually Smog. Thus, the introduction of these Green Crackers in India will majorly affect the quality of air in a positive manner.

Effects on Air Pollution

The biggest disadvantages of Green crackers is that only the manufacturers who have signed a deal with CSIR will be allowed to manufacture these crackers. All the other industries which produce the traditional type of crackers may be left unemployed.

Disadvantage

70 per cent of India’s crackers are manufactured in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, which continues to be the leading supplier of Green Crackers in India.
