Guwahati Wetlands that Face Risk of Encroachment, Pollution

Assam's only Ramsar site is facing the onslaught of encroachment for long. Construction works and dumping of garbage has affected this huge water body and its ecology. While work has been undertaken to rectify matters, the Beel still continues to suffer from pollution and other problems.

Deepor Beel

A prominent wetland within the city limits of Guwahati, this lake has faced rampant encroachment over the decades, drastically reducing its areas. While some efforts have been taken to save it, it still continues to face the risks of encroachment and pollution.

Sorusola Beel

Perhaps the largest wetland within Guwahati city, this acts as a major site for drainage and stormwater storage. However, illegal encroachment, garbage dumping and rampant pollution have reduced it to almost a wasteland even as it awaits some proper remedial steps by the authorities.

Borsola Beel

Silsako suffered from rampant encroachment over the years raising concerns among people. The recent encroachment drive, which has drawn a lot of media attention, is being seen as a way to better up things for the wetland even as the Beel gasps for some respite.

Bondajan channel is quite important as it lets the water of Silsako flow into the Brahmaputra. However, this wetland has also faced the onslaught of encroachment and pollution from garbage dumping. Works have been taken up in the past to rectify matters, however danger still looms over this wetland till major steps are undertaken.

Several smaller wetlands at Amingaon in North Guwahati have also suffered the effects of rampant encroachment. Many of them have even reportedly vanishes due to encroachment and construction activites over the years. The issue of encroachment in wetlands and hill areas in Amingaon is a matter that remains to be addressed properly.
