The first recorded incident of violence over the site occurred in 1853. The Babri Masjid, built in 1528 by Mughal emperor Babar, stood at the location until December 6, 1992, when it was demolished by karsevaks, leading to widespread communal riots.

The 1980s saw a surge in the campaign to build the Ram temple, led by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). In 1986, the district judge in Ayodhya ordered the gates of the contested mosque to be opened for Hindu prayers, which intensified the conflict.

The VHP laid the foundation for the Ram Temple in 1989, and the BJP's LK Advani led a Rath Yatra in 1990 to garner support for the temple movement.

In 2003, the Archaeological Survey of India conducted a survey that suggested the presence of a Hindu complex beneath the mosque, although this was contested by Muslim organizations.
