26 Jan, 2024

Republic Day is celebrated on January 26th every year in India. It marks the day when the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.

Significance and Date

On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India was formally adopted, making India a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. The Constitution was drafted by a Constituent Assembly led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Constitutional Adoption

The main Republic Day celebration takes place in the national capital, New Delhi, at Rajpath. A grand parade is held, showcasing India's military strength, cultural diversity, and technological achievements. The President of India hoists the national flag, and the event is attended by dignitaries and foreign guests.

Each year, a foreign head of state is invited as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations. This tradition symbolizes the strong diplomatic relations between India and the guest country.

The Republic Day celebrations conclude with the Beating Retreat ceremony, held on the evening of January 29th. This musical event is performed by the three wings of the Indian armed forces and marks the official end of the Republic Day festivities.

A tradition has been established where the Preamble to the Constitution of India is read out in schools, colleges, and public gatherings on Republic Day to remind citizens of the principles and ideals enshrined in the Constitution.
