Kajir Ronghangpi, the rhino lady after whom Kaziranga is named

Kajir Ronghangpi was a legendary figure believed to have lived in the area that is now Kaziranga National Park, along with her one-horned rhinoceros.

Based on oral history, Kajir Ronghangpi was taken from earth to the abodes of gods and goddesses.

On attaining divinity and blessings of special powers, she came back to earth in search of her earthly parents and brother Khoi Ronghang

It is believed that she brought with her paddy seeds and a rhinoceros (kindu) with the intention of ploughing the earth. 

Legend

She ultimately returned to the Gods' abode, leaving behind the rhinoceros in the territory. 

Daughter of a Karbi chief 

Located in Assam, the Kaziranga National Park's 430 square kilometre area sprinkled with elephant-grass meadows, swampy lagoons, and dense forests is home to more than 2200 Indian one-horned rhinoceros, approximately 2/3rd of their total world population.
