The tragic incident occurred on August 9 when a woman post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On August 13, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) called for a nationwide shutdown of outpatient department (OPD) services in response to the rape and murder of a woman post-graduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College.
Doctors and medical students staged protests at multiple locations, including Nair Hospital in Mumbai and Government Medical College & Hospital in Nagpur, demanding justice, enhanced safety measures, and a Central Protection Act for doctors.
Protesters are urging the State Government and Centre to intervene and order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the incident, along with meeting the demands of RG Kar Medical College doctors.
The shutdown of OPD services led to long queues and frustration among patients, particularly at RG Kar Medical College, where services were halted as part of the protest.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) addressed a letter to Union Minister JP Nadda, demanding a detailed inquiry and stronger safety measures for doctors, particularly women, while Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar criticized the delay in initiating a CBI probe.
