List of Enemy Properties in India, How India is Dealing With It?

The Indian government has initiated the sale process of enemy properties across the country. New guidelines have been implemented for the sale of enemy properties in India that is worth over Rs 1 lakh crore.

The term “Enemy Property” denotes the assets and possessions of individuals or entities that have been designated as “enemies” by the Indian government.

When was it started? The concept of "enemy property" was introduced as a result of the India-Pakistan wars of 1965 and 1971, which led to the migration of individuals from India to Pakistan. 

Out of the 12,611 enemy properties in India, 12,485 belong to Pakistani nationals and 126 belong to Chinese citizens.

Who is the present custodian of enemy property? The enemy properties are vested with the CEPI, an authority created under the Enemy Property Act. The government has earned over ₹3,400 crore from disposal of enemy properties, mostly movable assets like shares and gold, according to the 2021-22 annual report of the home ministry.

Union Home Ministry begins process to sell enemy properties In case of the enemy properties valued below ₹1 crore, the custodian shall offer for purchase to the occupant first and if offer of purchase is refused by the occupant, then the enemy property shall be disposed of in accordance with the procedure specified in the guidelines.

Surveying of enemy properties in UP speed up Uttar Pradesh — where a large number of these properties are located — is preparing to speed up its own survey, removing encroachments and assessing the value of such properties in the State.
