Lum Sohpetbneng: The Navel of Heaven

It is a a revered site for the Seng Khasi community of Meghalaya. They are the Khasis who still follow the religion and traditions of their ancestors and have not converted to Christianity.

What is Sohpetbneng?

In Khasi language, the word Sohpetbneng literally translates to ‘Navel of the Heavens’.

What does Sohpetbneng mean?

It is believed that it was on this spot that a golden ladder connected Heaven and Earth, creating a direct connection between men and God. The connection was, however, later severed according to a divine decree.

Ladder of Heaven

As per legend, seven clans of the Khasi tribe, collectively known as Hynniewtrep, which literally translates to "Seven Huts," are said to have arrived here as the planet's earliest settlers.

Significance

It is located around 40 km from the district headquarters Nongpoh, on the outskirts of Shillong close to Umiam Lake.

Lum Sohpetbneng is enveloped in verdant greenery and surrounded by majestic peaks creating a viewpoint for the visiting tourists. It serves as a perfect place for nature photography.

The annual pilgrimage to Meghalaya’s sacred Lum Sohpetbneng is held every year on the second Sunday of the month of February

Annual Pilgrimage

Known as ‘Ka Kiew Pyneh Rngiew’, the pilgrimage is organised by Seng Khasi Kmie and is meant to strengthen one’s essence (Ka Rngiew).

Name of the Pilgrimage

Prayers and rituals by the religious elders of Niam Khasi Niamtre (Indigenous faith of Khasi-Jaintia Hills) are completed in the sacred summit. Sanctified rice and water is distributed, and they also offer prayers at the site, believed to the precise location where mankind descended.
